Lord,
in my heart I carry a longing that this world cannot satisfy, and so in the dawn I come to you, the only source of my peace.
“I lift up my hands to you in prayer; like dry ground my soul is thirsty for you.” (Psalm 143:6)
Lord, more than anything else, I desire your presence in my life. I long for you as a dry land longs for rain. I feel a drought in my soul that nothing in this world can quench.
“My soul yearns and longs for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out to the living God.” (Psalm 84:2)
And yet, in the midst of my thirst and longing, I hear your loving call, your invitation, which takes no account of whether I have anything to offer.
“Oh, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters! And you who have no money, come, buy and eat!” (Isaiah 55:1)
And so I come, Lord. I come empty-handed, but with a heart full of trust. I come to you, Jesus, for I know that you are the Spring promised by the Father.
“But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)
I ask you, fill me today with this living water. May it not only quench the thirst of my soul, but may it be transformed within me into a spring that will flow and refresh those around me as well.
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:38)
Help me to understand what I truly long for. Not just for emotions and good feelings, but for your righteousness and truth. May I hunger and thirst for that which is truly important.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)
Turn my heart away from longing for the empty things of this world. May my greatest hunger not be for bread, and my greatest thirst not for water.
“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.’” (Amos 8:11)
I believe in your promise, that you yourself will provide for my thirsty soul. You have promised to pour out your Spirit and your blessing upon the dry land of my heart.
“For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.” (Isaiah 44:3)
Thank you, for you are my shepherd. I trust that today you will lead me to where I can rest and drink from your springs of peace.
“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” (Psalm 23:2-3)
You are the God who is faithful from the beginning to the end. Your word is certain, and your promise is eternal.
“It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.” (Revelation 21:6)
Thank you, Lord, for this incredible gift. May I live today from this truth, saturated by your presence and quenched by the water that flows into eternal life.
Amen.
