Father,
My heart is often a source of turmoil, so I ask You, transform it, that words of life may spring forth from it.
I confess that my heart is often restless. It is filled with worry, weariness, and impatience. And all too often, this reveals itself in my words, especially toward those who are closest to me.
“So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!” (James 3:5)
So many times, Lord, I have ignited a needless fire with my words. Through misunderstanding, criticism, or mere ill will, I have caused pain. My thoughtless words have wounded.
“The words of the rash pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18)
Father, today I ask You, help me not to pierce, but to heal. Help me to choose life and not death in my conversations. Your Word reminds me of the great power my words possess.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21)
I no longer wish to eat the fruit of strife, bitterness, and regret. Set a guard before my mouth, O Lord. Help my words today to build up and encourage.
“Let no unwholesome word come from your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, that it may bring grace to those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:29)
Teach me the discipline of the Spirit, I pray. Before I speak, let me first listen—not only with my ears, but with my heart. Restrain me when I wish to judge quickly or respond in anger.
“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” (James 1:19)
And when I am faced with the tension or anger of others today, may my response not add fuel to the fire, but bring peace and calm.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1)
I desire, Lord, for my words today to bring health and sweetness to the souls of those around me. I want them to be like a balm, not a knife.
“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24)
I am aware that all this cannot be merely the fruit of my own resolve. My strength is small and my will is weak. My words are empty if Your power and Your Spirit are not behind them.
“For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.” (1 Corinthians 4:20)
Therefore, I ask You, fill me today with Your power. Transform my heart, so that from its abundance may come forth words that glorify You and bless others. To You I entrust this day, my thoughts, and every word I will speak.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
