Trouble with Sleep? Here Are 5 Beautiful Bible Verses About Sleeping

Sleep is a creation of God, a gift that enables good rest, productivity, sound health, and long life. Although many people have trouble with sleep these days, here are 5 Bible verses about sleeping you can turn to that will help you get back to good sleep.

God Instituted Rest

Have you noticed that every living creature answers the call of sleep? There is no such thing as a sleepless creature.

After each day’s activity, sleep helps us rest our bodies and minds. Ideally, we feel refreshed, productive, and ready for a new day when we wake up.

Scripture tells us God Himself instituted rest. He gave us day and night to separate our toil from our rest. The day ends when it gets dark and begins again in the morning for our work to start again.

“And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.”

Genesis 1:4–5

Then, at the end of God’s creation, He also “rested,” ceasing all His work and taking a break.

“And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.”

Genesis 2:2

Why Do People Have Trouble with Sleep?

Despite our clear need for rest, there are many reasons we may have difficulty sleeping at night. These can include anxiety, stress, depression, work, and many other things we deal with daily.

But this isn’t God’s plan for us. An unhealthy sleep cycle is detrimental to our health, and it is not what God intends for our life. He wants us to rest in faith, knowing that He watches over us.

His truth about rest can be found in the Bible.

5 Bible Verses about Sleeping

“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”

Psalm 127:2

Sleep isn’t something you are supposed to struggle to have. It is God’s gift to you to help you be refreshed and more productive.

“Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much; but the surfeit of the rich will not let him sleep.”

Ecclesiastes 5:12

After every good day’s work, God has designed it so that you are able to find rest from all your toils. He wants you to lie down without fear, knowing that you have done well for the day.

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for thou alone, O Lord, makest me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8

When you sleep, here is what you are telling God: Father, I know there is so much going on in my life and in the world today, but I will not let it take away from my peace. I trust you with my life. I know that everything is okay in your hands.

“Now a word was brought to me stealthily, my ear received the whisper of it. Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men.”

Job 4:12–13

One great blessing of sleep is that it forces you to be quiet and still. God can easily speak to you even while you are sleeping, in ways you typically wouldn’t see or hear when you are on the go.

“Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.”

Psalm 116:7
