Sleep is a creation of God, a gift that enables good rest, productivity, sound health, and long life. Although many people have trouble with sleep these days, here are 5 Bible verses about sleeping you can turn to that will help you get back to good sleep.
God Instituted Rest
Have you noticed that every living creature answers the call of sleep? There is no such thing as a sleepless creature.
After each day’s activity, sleep helps us rest our bodies and minds. Ideally, we feel refreshed, productive, and ready for a new day when we wake up.
Scripture tells us God Himself instituted rest. He gave us day and night to separate our toil from our rest. The day ends when it gets dark and begins in the morning so our work can start again.
“And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.”
Genesis 1:4–5
Then, at the end of God’s creation, He also “rested,” ceasing all His work and taking a break.
“And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.”
Genesis 2:2
Why Do People Have Trouble with Sleep?
Despite our clear need for rest, we may have difficulty sleeping at night for many reasons. These can include anxiety, stress, depression, work, and many other things we deal with daily.
But this isn’t God’s plan for us. An unhealthy sleep cycle is detrimental to our health, and it is not what God intends for our lives. He wants us to rest in faith, knowing He watches over us.
His truth about rest can be found in the Bible.

Psalm 4:8
