Short Prayer of Surrender To God

Heavenly Father, I come before You today with this short prayer of surrender, to give my life fully into Your hands. Lord, I believe that You are a good Father. You know what is best for me, and I entrust my life and all my plans to You.

Too often, Lord, I grasp so tightly to my hopes, dreams, and plans that I fail to consider Your plans for me. I find myself so tempted to try to be fully in control that I begin to forget that I desperately need You, Lord.

We read in sacred scripture,

Proverbs 3:5–6

I do not know the future, Lord, and though at times it can be so difficult to trust, I ask that Your will be done in my life. Not my will, but yours. When I try to control my own life, I will always go off course, but when I surrender my life to You, I believe that You will make my paths straight.

Lord Jesus, you say in the Gospels,

“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

Matthew 16:25

I know, Lord, that to be Your disciple means to lay down my life, plans, and desires in submission to Yours. But I also know that when we surrender ourselves fully to You, You will give us eternal life and the freedom of living in communion with You.

I ask that You would help me, and all Christians, to live a life of deeper surrender. I ask for Your strength to overcome the temptation to take over, the temptation to control, and the temptation to strive and achieve my dreams at any cost.

Lord, I long to grow closer to You. I long to do Your will and surrender to You in every aspect of my life. You know the desires of my heart, Lord, but greater than any other desire is my desire to surrender to You.

As I surrender to You, Lord Jesus, I ask that you would grant me the grace of good and holy desires. When I desire something that is not pleasing to You, I pray that You would remove it from my heart and instill within me only what is honoring to You.

We know, Heavenly Father, that during his earthly life, Jesus provided us with the example of living a life of surrender, and we pray that You would help us to imitate Christ’s perfect submission to Your will each and every day.

Christ said in the Garden of Gethsemane,

“Not my will, but yours be done.”

Luke 22:42

That is my short prayer of surrender, Lord: “Not my will, but yours be done.” May Your will be done in my life, and may all my thoughts, words, and deeds be pleasing and honoring to You, Lord.
