A Grammy-nominated Christian country artist, Rhett Walker has always found solace in his faith, even when life seemed darkest. In a candid interview, Walker shared the story of his troubled youth and how God’s unwavering presence guided him through the most challenging times.
Raised in the church, Walker’s teenage years were anything but smooth. He was expelled from high school and became a father at just 17. Yet, despite these challenges, Walker found his way. Today, he’s been married to his high school sweetheart, April, for 20 years. They share four children and a life rooted in the faith that carried them through their most difficult moments.
Reflecting on his journey, Walker recalled how his first album, released in 2012, was a testament to his struggles and triumphs. “It was my testimony, from teenage pregnancy to navigating the chaos of high school,” he said.
His latest album, Days That We Dreamed Of, culminates two decades of life lessons inspired by a simple yet profound realization during a conversation with his wife on their porch.
“We were sitting on the back porch, and April said, ‘We’re living in the days that we dreamed of,'” Walker shared. “Life can be hell to walk through, but when you look at what God has set up, these are the days we dreamed of.”
The album is deeply personal, touching on family, faith, and love. One song, “Young Love,” celebrates his enduring relationship with April. “My relationship with my wife is the most important to me,” Walker said, reflecting on their 20 years of marriage. “There’s a way to celebrate that through the lens of Jesus.”
Walker’s music has resonated with many, leading to performances at the Grand Ole Opry and a nomination for Bluegrass/Country/Roots Recorded Song of The Year at this year’s Dove Awards. Yet, for Walker, success isn’t about accolades. “It’s about being who you are, who you’re made to be,” he emphasized. “People appreciate authenticity. The same Rhett that wrote the title track in Publix is the same Rhett you see on stage and at home.”
As he continues to connect with fans through his music, Walker remains grounded in the faith that saved him as a troubled teen. “The accolades are cool, but what excites me most is connecting with people through my music,” he said. “It’s all about making our way through life and trying to love Jesus.”
