Merciful Father, today I ask you, teach me to measure with the measure of your heart, not by the small measure of my reason.
Today I come before you like the servant from your parable. I come with a debt I can never repay—a debt of ten thousand talents.
These are not coins, Lord, but my mistakes, my sins, my omissions, and the grudges I carry in my heart. I lay all of this at your feet, for I have nothing with which to pay.
Lord, have mercy on me!
I know that I justly deserve condemnation, but you, my King, are different. Instead of selling me and taking all that I have, you have mercy on me.
Your heart softens, you see my distress, and you forgive my entire, unimaginable debt. Thank you for this undeserved, abundant grace that sets me free.
But my mind is so often like Peter’s. I look for limits, calculating how much mercy I am obliged to give. Seven times? That already seems like a lot to me. But you, with patience, show me the boundlessness of your love.
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Matthew 18:22)
And then, Lord, the worst happens. I leave your presence, unburdened and free, and I meet my brother who owes me a hundred denarii. A small grudge, a harsh word, a forgotten favor.
And instead of showing him the mercy you have shown me, I grab him and begin to choke him. I forget your gift and become the wicked servant.
Break the hardness of my heart!
I forget that the only true measure of love is your measure. I long to measure by your standard, Lord, and not by my own small, selfish one. Remind me every moment that my forgiveness of others is inseparable from your forgiveness of me.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. (Matthew 6:12)
Therefore, I ask you, change me. Do not let my hard-heartedness separate me from you. Give me a heart that remembers you, a heart overflowing with gratitude for the forgiveness I have received.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luke 6:36)
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. (Matthew 5:7)
When it is most difficult, when I feel I cannot forgive, remind me of you on the cross, of your example of perfect forgiveness.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
Help me to understand today that love for you cannot exist without love for my brother. I cannot claim to love you if I harbor resentment and hatred in my heart.
Whoever claims to love God but hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. (1 John 4:20)
May this day be permeated by your forgiveness, flowing through me to all whom I meet. Amen.
