Lord, why is my heart so hungry for human praise, when the only food it truly needs is your love?
Lord, I confess that I often care more about what others think than about what is truly in my heart. My actions so easily become a performance for the outside world, instead of a sincere expression of my love for you.
“Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;” (Matthew 23:5)
The thought frightens me that I might draw near to you with words alone, while my heart remains cold and distant. I do not want to honor you only with my lips while, in reality, I am worshiping myself and my own reputation.
“The Lord says: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.'” (Isaiah 29:13)
Keep me, I pray, from the pride that desires the first places, words of praise, and titles. Remind me that all arrogance is but a path to a fall and to spiritual emptiness.
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
My Guide, turn me from empty appearances to Yourself
Jesus, you are my only Teacher, my only Guide. Do not let me seek guidance in fleeting things or in the approval of others. I want to be your disciple, one who not only listens to your word but also puts it into practice.
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
Help me today to truly become a doer of your Word through small acts of service, not through grand words. Let me recognize in every person a brother or a sister, not an opportunity for my own self-exaltation.
Teach me that the true path to you is the way downward, into humility and service. True greatness is not found in being served by others, but in my serving them.
“The greatest among you will be your servant.” (Matthew 23:11)
Humble me, that You may exalt me
Lord, today I ask for the grace of humility. Take from me the desire to be exalted and give me a heart without distinctions, a heart that knows how to seek the last place.
I desire to be humbled in the eyes of the world, so that you, my God, will one day exalt me. Today, let me not seek myself, but you in my neighbor.
Amen.
