Jesus,
Your word today sounds so radical: whoever keeps your word will never see death.
How easily I misunderstand You, just as Your listeners did back then. I, too, often get caught in earthly logic, in the fear of transience, forgetting that You speak of a Life that transcends everything I know.
They thought You were possessed because You placed Yourself above Abraham and the prophets. But You did not seek Your own glory.
The Father Honors You, Not You Yourself
When they accused You of self-glorification, You redirected all honor to the Father. You said that He is the one who glorifies You, even though those who claimed God as their own did not truly know Him.
You teach me that true greatness does not come from self-praise, but from a relationship with Him. I long to understand this deep bond, for I know that You and the Father are one. Your desire is for everyone to honor You, for in doing so, we honor the Father who sent You into this world.
That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. (John 5:23)
How incredible it is that Abraham rejoiced at the thought of Your day. He looked forward into the future and saw You through faith.
His faith transcended time and allowed him to rejoice in You even before You walked this earth.
Before Time Began, You Are
When they confronted You with Your youth, You uttered words that shook the foundations of their world: “Before Abraham was, I am.” Not “I was,” but “I am.”
The eternal “I am,” the God who exists outside of time. This is the same majesty You had with the Father before anything was created.
“And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” (John 17:5)
In You all things hold together; You are before all things, and through You, everything received its meaning and existence.
“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)
Lord, when they heard these words, they picked up stones. They were terrified by Your divinity. Today, I pray that my heart may not be like theirs.
May I not pick up the stones of judgment and misunderstanding, but instead open myself to You in faith. Give me a heart that recognizes You in Your eternal glory and does not fear You.
May I honor You today as the eternal God who entered time to lead me into eternity.
Amen.
