You, who are the Bread of Life, look upon my soul, which this morning is hungry and thirsty for you.
But you see me. You do not see me as a number in the crowd, but you know me personally. You see my weariness and my hunger, which has perhaps lasted for more than just three days. Your heart is moved, because you care whether I grow weary on the way.
“I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.” (Mark 8:2)
Lord, your gaze reaches into my depths
Like your disciples, I too often see only lack and powerlessness. I look at my empty hands and ask myself, “How?” How can I feed my soul, how can I provide for the needs of my family, how can I love when I myself feel so empty?
But you do not ask me what I do not have. You ask me, “How many loaves do you have?”
Today I bring you my seven loaves: my weariness, my worries, my fragile faith, my small joys, and my humble talents. All that I am and all that I have is so little, so insufficient.
And yet you tell me not to despair, but to cooperate with you. Help me to step out of my comfort zone and place what I have at your disposal.
“But he answered them, ‘You give them something to eat.'” (Mark 6:37)
You are the bread that truly satisfies me
And a miracle happens. You take this littleness of mine, give thanks to the Father, break it, and multiply it. What was insignificant in my hands becomes food for thousands in your hands. You teach me that you are not a God of scarcity, but a God of unimaginable abundance.
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'” (John 6:35)
With this miracle, you reveal a deeper truth to me. My deepest hunger is not for earthly bread, but for you, for your word which gives life.
“And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but by everything that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)
And this broken bread in the wilderness points to your Body, which you offered for me. Every time you take, give thanks, and break, you invite me to remember your greatest sacrifice.
“and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.'” (1 Corinthians 11:24)
Thank you, Lord, for the full baskets of leftovers, which remind me that with you there is always more than enough. May I today be satisfied and content in you.
Amen.
