Jesus,
I awaken today with Your prayer on my mind—those words You spoke when You lifted Your eyes to heaven. You prayed not only for Your disciples, but for me.
For me, who lives millennia after them, and who has come to believe in You through their word. Thank You for the unmerited grace of being included in Your prayer.
Your greatest request for me was that I would be one with other believers, just as You, Father, and You, Jesus, are one. That we all might be one in You.
What a powerful, and yet, what a difficult request! In a world full of division, You call me to unity, so that the world might believe that You are the One sent from the Father.
That We May Be One, as You Are One
Help me, Lord, to live out Your desire today. Grant that I may strive for peace and reconciliation in my relationships, that I may be a bond of peace and not a stumbling block.
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)
You say that You have given us the glory that the Father gave You, so that we may become perfectly one. I do not fully understand this mystery, but I accept it in faith.
I accept that You are in me and the Father is in You, and that the Father has loved me just as He has loved You. What an incredible and profound truth!
“To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27)
And this hope, this Christ in me, will not put me to shame, because it is founded on Your love, which You pour into my heart through the Holy Spirit.
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)
Father, I Want Them to Be with Me
Your desire is for me to be with You where You are. To behold Your glory, which comes from the Father’s eternal love, from before the creation of the world.
I long for this, Lord. I long to see You face to face. Thank you that I can stand in Your presence even today, through this prayer.
This is Your invitation for me, for this day and for all my days.
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.” (John 15:9)
And all this is possible because You have revealed the Father’s name to me. Because You continually reveal it to me through Your Word and the sacraments. So that this immeasurable love, with which the Father loves You, may dwell in me, and that You, Jesus, may live in me. This is my prayer for today.
“I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” (John 17:26)
Amen.
