Jesus,.
Into this new morning I bring the weight of yesterday’s failings, and I seek Your grace.
I hear loud accusations citing the law and its rules. I see fingers pointing at me, and hands already holding stones.
“In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” (John 8:5)
I know they are right. According to the law, I deserve condemnation. I, too, hold stones far too often, ready to throw them at others, forgetting how fragile and sinful I am.
“If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?” (Psalm 130:3)
But You, Jesus, do not join the circle of accusers. You stoop down. In the dust from which I was made, You write something new. Your silence is louder than all the shouts. Then You straighten up, and Your word cuts through the tension.
“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7)
And the stones fall from their hands. The accusers leave, one by one, because Your light exposes them. We are left alone. You and I. You, the only one without sin, and I, the very definition of sin. But You do not throw a stone. You offer me Your hand.
You ask me where my accusers are, and I see that only Your mercy remains. You teach me to live out of this grace, not to condemn and not to judge, for You are the first to not condemn me.
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)
This is the secret of Your heart. You do not seek sacrifices or the keeping of rules, but a repentant heart that accepts Your love. Your word sets me free and invites You to make all things new within me.
“But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13)
Your final words are not a condemnation, but a promise and a mission: “Go, and from now on, sin no more!” I can only do this because You forget and erase my past. Thank you for teaching me how a true walk in freedom is possible.
“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.” (Isaiah 43:25)
Thank you, Lord, for this new day, which I begin without condemnation, in the power of Your forgiveness.
Amen.
