Lord, today I do not ask for a sign from heaven, but wish to remember the one sign that truly matters: your cross and the empty tomb.
How often I am like them, Lord. I, too, in my uncertainty and fear, long for clear affirmations, for heavenly signs to silence my doubts. I, too, sometimes approach You with a demand instead of a plea.
“Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, ‘Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.'” (Matthew 12:38)
You See into My Heart
Lord, you look beyond my outward words, for You see into my heart. You see when my plea for a sign stems from genuine distress and when it is merely a test of Your patience, an expression of my own distrust and hardness of heart.
When I think of Your deep sigh, which came from the depths of Your heart, I realize how much their—and my—spiritual blindness must have pained You.
““Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”” (John 4:48)
Forgive me for trying to limit You to spectacular events. Help me not to overlook the God who is quietly present in everyday life, in the beauty of creation, in the kindness of others, and above all, in Your Word.
I do not want to be one of those You had to leave behind, crossing to the other side because they were unwilling to believe beyond a dazzling facade.
Give Me a Faith That Needs No Proof
Lord, You have given us a sign. Not the kind they demanded, but one immeasurably greater. A sign intended not for the curious, but for those who seek salvation. The sign of the prophet Jonah.
“For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:40)
This is the only sign I truly need: Your death and resurrection. It is the ultimate proof of Your unconditional love, which surpasses every possible sign from heaven. This sign was not given for testing, but for salvation.
I do not want to be like Thomas, who had to see in order to believe. I long for the faith that is blessed, the faith You praise and call us to.
“Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'” (John 20:29)
Lord, today I ask You for this blessing. For a faith that does not demand, but simply trusts. For a heart that does not test You, but loves You.
Amen.
love, and peace .
Amen 🙏
