Lord,
You do not see as the world sees. While I compare myself to others, measuring my worth by appearance, success, and strength, You look deeper.
“The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
Lord, look into my heart
So often I feel like David—overlooked, the least important, forgotten somewhere in the fields of my daily life, while others who seem stronger and more suitable stand in the front row.
But You, Lord, spoke to Samuel, and today You speak to me in the silence of my heart:
“I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” (1 Samuel 16:1)
You are a God who chooses the unexpected. You choose me, despite my smallness, despite my failings. Invite me to Your sacrifice, Lord; consecrate me in Your presence. I no longer want to be a mere observer.
“Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” (1 Samuel 16:5)
I am rising from my mediocrity, from my hiding place, because I hear Your call echoing in my soul, inviting me to something greater:
“The LORD said, ‘Rise and anoint him; this is the one.’” (1 Samuel 16:12)
Anoint me with Your Spirit
Lord, today I ask You to pour out Your oil upon me. May Your Spirit come powerfully upon my being, just as it once came upon David.
“So from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David.” (1 Samuel 16:13)
This is my deepest desire, my God. Baptize me with the Holy Spirit, so that I may live as Your chosen one. Your Word promises me that You will not leave me alone. For You have said:
“I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him.” (Psalm 89:20)
And You promised him Your strength, and You promise it also to me, that You will support me at every step:
“My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.” (Psalm 89:21)
With this strength, with this assurance, I can cry out with all my heart and call You Father, my Savior, my solid rock.
“He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.’” (Psalm 89:26)
You lift me from the dust and set me on high, not because of my merits, but because of Your immeasurable love.
“And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth.” (Psalm 89:27)
Jesus, You are my King, the perfect fulfillment of this promise. You free me from the chains of rules and laws that suffocate me. Just as David was hungry and ate the consecrated bread, I too am hungry for You, hungry for life.
You place my need for You above every rigid rule. You are the Lord of my Sabbath, the Lord of my rest and my work. You are the Lord of my life.
Thank You for this freedom.
Amen.
