Life throws a lot at us, doesn’t it, sisters? From daily annoyances to earth-shattering difficulties, challenges have a way of stealing our joy and leaving us feeling hopeless.
Now, I’m no stranger to tough times. A few years ago, I was blindsided by a layoff at my company. I had been with them for over a decade, steadily climbing the ladder.

My job wasn’t just a paycheck; it was a source of pride and a sense of belonging. Suddenly, my desk was cleared out, and I was facing a mountain of bills with a family depending on me. It was a scary time, filled with doubt and insecurity.

This verse became my mantra during that time. The job search was gruelling, filled with rejection emails and dead ends. I’d submit applications, tailor my resume, and nail interviews…only to hear nothing back. The constant cycle of hope and disappointment wore me down.
But every morning, I would remind myself that God’s strength wasn’t limited to physical power. He could strengthen my resolve, my courage, and my resilience to keep going.
My refuge and strength
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”

The future felt uncertain, and fear was a constant companion. Every night, intrusive thoughts would flood my mind. Would we lose our house? Would the kids have to change schools? Would I ever find a job?
But clinging to this verse helped me remember that God was my rock, my foundation. He wouldn’t let me fall apart, no matter how difficult things got.
One night, fear spiralled into a full-blown panic attack. I couldn’t breathe, my heart racing, convinced something terrible was about to happen.
My husband held me, and we prayed together, repeating this verse over and over. Slowly, my breathing eased, and the panic subsided. I didn’t feel any less afraid of the future, but in that moment I found refuge, and that was enough.
God works
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Romans 8:28
This one was tough. How could losing my job possibly be good? But as I started volunteering at a local community center, helping with after-school programs and serving meals at a soup kitchen, I began to see how God might be using this time to redirect my path.
At first, it was daunting. I wasn’t used to being on the receiving end of help, and it was humbling to find myself serving others in such a direct way.
However, interacting with people from different walks of life, seeing their struggles, and making even a small difference gradually chipped away at my self-pity.
It reminded me that my worth wasn’t tied to my job title and that I could still contribute to my community. This newfound perspective brought a sense of purpose back into my life, and gradually started to rebuild my confidence.

One particularly nerve-wracking interview stands out. It was for a position that aligned perfectly with my skills, but during the interview, they threw me a curveball – a scenario-based question about something I had no experience in.
Panic started to set in, but then this verse flashed through my mind. I took a deep breath, and instead of giving up or trying to bluff an answer, I decided to be honest.
I told them I hadn’t dealt with a situation like that before, but I explained how I’d apply my problem-solving skills and seek guidance from team members.
To my surprise, the interviewers seemed impressed by my honesty and willingness to learn. It turned out to be one of my best interviews, though I didn’t get the job. But it left me with a renewed sense of confidence that God would indeed equip me for whatever challenges were ahead.
Do not be afraid

Fear of failure threatened to paralyze me. I was afraid of rejection, afraid of not being good enough. But this verse reminded me that God was with me every step of the way. He wouldn’t give me challenges I couldn’t handle, and He would give me the courage to face them.
There were days when I wanted to hide under the covers and give up. The job search seemed endless, and my confidence was dwindling.
However, this verse challenged me to get out of my comfort zone. I started networking, attending conferences, and even cold-calling companies I admired. It wasn’t easy, but remembering that God was with me gave me the courage to take risks and put myself out there.
A New Beginning
The job search stretched on for months. There were countless applications, interviews, and rejections. But through it all, I held onto God’s promises.
I prayed, I memorized verses, and I sought support from my faith community. And slowly, something shifted. My fear lessened, replaced by a quiet confidence I knew wasn’t my own.
Then, finally, it happened. An offer, not for the same type of job I’d held before, but something adjacent, something that still utilized my skills, and opened a door to new possibilities. It wasn’t what I initially envisioned, but it was a blessing – a testament to God’s faithfulness.
This whole experience wasn’t just about finding another job. It was a journey of faith. I learned the true meaning of surrender— not giving up— but letting go of my own plans and trusting in God’s.
I learned that my identity isn’t rooted in a job title, but in being a beloved child of God. And I learned that even in the darkest of valleys, His hope shines through.
