In a sudden shift, James Morris, son of Gateway Church's founder Robert Morris, has resigned from his leadership role. This decision comes just weeks after his appointment and amidst a child sex abuse scandal involving his father. Gateway Church, located in Southlake, Texas, announced that James and his wife Bridgette mutually agreed with church elders to step down.
In a move to stabilize the church, acclaimed author and pastor Max Lucado will join as a teaching pastor. Additionally, Swedish pastor Joakim Lundqvist will take on a more pastoral role.
The scandal involves accusations from Cindy Clemishire, who alleges that Robert Morris sexually abused her starting in 1982 when she was 12. Morris has admitted to “inappropriate sexual behavior” but denied full responsibility. The church is now conducting an independent review of the allegations.
Gateway elders expressed confidence that James and Bridgette Morris will serve as senior pastors elsewhere and thanked them for their years of dedication. The church will provide further updates to the congregation over the weekend.
