On September 4th, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called for prayer after a shooting at Apalachee High School left four dead and nine others injured. The shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school, is now in custody.
The incident unfolded swiftly, with law enforcement quickly intervening. Gray, who was already on the FBI’s radar, surrendered to a school officer without further violence. According to Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, the shooter realized resisting would have led to a fatal outcome. “The shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up, it would end with an OIS [officer-involved shooting],” Smith said.
Responding to the tragedy, Governor Kemp urged Georgians to stand together in prayer. “I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms,” he stated. He assured the state is coordinating with local, state, and federal partners to address the situation.
