American golfer Scottie Scheffler, who already boasts two Masters titles, 42 Top-5 finishes, a No. 1 world ranking, and $70 million in career earnings, has yet to add an Olympic gold medal to his collection.
That changed on Sunday in France. Scheffler’s 9-under-par 62 in the final round edged out the UK’s Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke, securing the gold with a total score of -19. Fleetwood took silver at -18, and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama claimed bronze at -17.
As the American National Anthem played during the medal ceremony, tears streamed down Scheffler’s face, a moment captured and shared widely on social media.
“I would say first and foremost, I’m proud of the country I’m from,” Scheffler told reporters later. “I’m proud to be an American. I got emotional the other night watching the gold medal ceremony for the women’s gymnastics.”
Like Scheffler, the American women’s gymnastics team had also clinched gold. His pride was palpable. “I take tremendous pride in coming over here and representing my country. It was very emotional being up on stage as the flag was raised, singing the national anthem. It’s one I’ll remember for a long time.”
Scheffler also shared his heritage, mentioning his mother’s Italian roots and his father’s German lineage. “We’ve been here for a few generations,” he said. “And I learned from a young age to take my hat off and hold my hand over my heart for the National Anthem. My parents taught me what it means to be an American and what it means to be free. I’m proud to be representing the country this week.”
Earlier this year, Scheffler made headlines at the Masters for his victory and his expression of faith. “I am a faithful guy. I believe in a Creator. I believe in Jesus,” Scheffler had said.
“Ultimately, I think that’s what defines me the most. I feel I’ve been given a platform to compete and show my talent. I think that’s what defines me the most is my faith. I believe in one Creator, and I’ve been called to come out here, do my best to compete, and glorify God. That’s pretty much it.”
