A fair in Brazil turned tragic on Saturday when a missionary and gospel singer, Keyla Silva, found herself caught in a fatal crossfire. The 49-year-old was buying a pastry at a kiosk in Goiania when a gunman missed his intended target, striking her instead.
Silva, a beloved figure in her community, was inadvertently pulled into a violent scene. The shooter had already killed a man and then aimed for the victim’s girlfriend. In the chaos, the bullet intended for the girlfriend hit Silva.
Max Costa, Silva’s husband, spoke to Brazilian news outlet G1. “She went to buy a pastry for my mother-in-law and, when she went to pay, a man arrived and shot a young man who was behind her,” Costa recounted. He expressed the cruel irony of his wife being “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Silva is in stable condition at a local hospital, which is a relief amid the turmoil. Authorities have interrogated three individuals, yet the shooter remains at large, casting a shadow over the community.
The incident has shaken the residents and highlights the unpredictable nature of violence that can touch anyone, anywhere. For now, the city of Goiania waits anxiously for justice and the safe recovery of Keyla Silva.
